11 new positive COVID-19 cases in St. Kitts & Nevis
The COVID-19 virus continues to spread throughout the communities within St. Kitts & Nevis.
On Monday 7th June an additional 11 cases were confirmed, according to the Minister of Health, Hon. Akilah Byron-Nisbett, at the National Emergency Operations Conference (NEOC).
Four of the active cases have been hospitalized and at least one of them is reportedly in critical condition. The total number of positive cases within the Federation is now at 94. This means that the Federation has recorded 49 new cases between May 19 to June 7.
The country has been under curfew over the past two weeks in an effort to curtail the virus. The curfew was adjusted yesterday, and citizens and residents are asked to remain off the streets from 8:00 pm to 5:00 am daily starting today Tuesday 8th June.
All schools have been closed for the remainder of the school year with no official word as to when school will be reopened. Lessons are expected to continue via an online learning platform.
Although the NEOC has reported only 11 additional active cases, several businesses have reported they have employees who have tested positive, some of these businesses have temporarily closed their doors as a result. To date there have been at least two positive cases at the largest commercial bank within the Federation, St. Kitts-Nevis-Anguilla National Bank, at least two positive cases at the Karibhana clothing store, seventeen SCASPA employees have been quarantined according to the Minister responsible for Air and Sea Ports Authority Hon. Lindsay Grant and one positive case at Royal Logistics a local shipping company.
The Caribbean Alert was informed that the staff member of Royal Logistics was on leave for ten days before he found out he was positive for COVID-19. Upon discovery, he informed his manager, who then had his entire company tested at the company’s expense. All tests returned negative.
To date, there have been no deaths related to COVID-19 within the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis. However, on a local talk show, Issues on Freedom FM, it was alleged by a local doctor that several persons over the past year, since the start of the pandemic, would have died from pneumonia and he called upon the government to review these cases as they may have been related to COVID-19.
