112-year-old Puerto Rican becomes world's oldest living man
Puerto Rico's Emilio Flores Márquez, at the age of 112 years and 326 days, has been confirmed as the world's oldest living male by Guinness World Records.
Flores Márquez was born on Aug. 8, 1908, in Carolina, Puerto Rico. He is the second oldest of 11 children. As the firstborn son, he devoted his early life to providing and caring for his siblings. Flores Márquez often helped his father on their sugarcane farm by watering and loading the sugarcane onto wagons.
“I was the oldest of the children, so I did everything. I scrubbed, I took care of the boys, I did everything," Flores Márquez told Guinness World Record.
What was his key to a long life? Flores Márquez, known on the island as "Don Millo," said it's to live with "an abundance of love and to live life without anger."
He said he found that love with his wife of 57 years, Andrea Perez, who passed away in 2010. The couple had four children together, two of whom are still alive and caring for Flores Márquez. He now has five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Flores Márquez lives in Rio Piedras with his two children, who praised their father and upbringing.
"My father raised me with love, loving everyone. He always told my siblings and me to do good, to share everything with others. Besides, Christ lives in me," the children said in a statement to Guinness.
