17-year-old charged with murder in the Bahamas
A 17-year-old accused of murder was yesterday remanded to the adolescent section of the prison, despite requests by his lawyers that he be remanded to the Sandilands Rehabilitation Centre.
Attorneys Ian Cargill and Wendawn Miller-Frazer claimed that the teen’s family had provided documentation to show that he had an undisclosed mental condition, which meant he should be detained at SRC.
However, Magistrate Samuel McKinney said that the teen needed to be detained at a secure facility. He said he could revisit his decision to remand the teen at the prison if his lawyers could show that SRC had the necessary security to detain a murder suspect.
Prosecutors allege that the teen, whose name and address have been withheld to protect his identity, fatally shot Rudolph Roberts off Lumbumba Drive on August 4.
The teen did not have to enter a plea to the murder charge when he made his initial court appearance before McKinney.
The teen returns to court on November 9.
