4 killed, 5 injured in Norwood shooting spree
One of the three men shot dead in Norwood, St James, yesterday morning is believed to have been among the gunmen who carried out a deadly attack in the Warrica Drive section of the community on Friday night, killing another man.
Those slaughtered in the bloody mayhem, which unfolded in the community blanketed by a zone of special operations, have been identified as 22-year-old Damion Minto and 25-year-old Leroy Martin, both of Warrica Drive, as well as 17-year-old Devonte Lindo, a store clerk of Egypt Lane in Cherry Gardens, and all in Norwood.
The other victim, believed to have been one of the shooters, remained unidentified up to press time last night.
The Freeport police report that the latest incident took place about 10:15 a.m. on Warrica Drive, after four men armed with high-powered weapons entered the community using a footpath from an adjoining area and opened fire at persons walking and sitting along the roadway.
The gunmen reportedly chased both Martin and Minto.
It is also reported that while Minto was being chased, a stray bullet struck a 14-year-old girl, who was inside her home getting dressed to attend church.
The unidentified male is believed to have been shot dead by his cronies as they fired wildly at persons in the community.
Five other persons were also injured during the hail of bullets and are being treated at hospital.
National Security Minister Dr Horace Chang and Area One commander Assistant Commissioner of Police Clifford Chambers visited the scene following the shooting.
Member of parliament of St James North western said that First, there was a shooting earlier in the night in Cherry Gardens, where a young man was killed in the vicinity of his house. We are not sure, but it (second shooting) appears to have been some retaliation to [the previous] incident,”
“There are clear indications of where they came from and who they are, and ... the police have been using their intelligence skills very effectively over the past weeks and I expect them to find the perpetrators of these crimes and get them off the street,” he added.
Chambers said his detectives would be leaving no stone unturned, adding that more than 50 spent casings were found at the site of the second attack.
“One person who was shot and killed, allegedly he was one of the attackers, so it is clear where this is coming from and investigations so far are pointing us in the right direction,” he said.
Chang and Chambers paid visits to the relatives of the teenage girl and family members of the other four injured victims.
Residents of Warrica Drive condemned the murders, saying that the victims were good men.
“Dem never deserve fi dead di way dem dead. Dem kill dem like dog an mi shock fi see how dem just come kill off the youth dem inna broad daylight,” one resident said.
In the earlier attack, which took place about 8:15 p.m. on Friday, gunmen struck in Cherry Gardens, killing Lindo.
Reports are that the 17-year-old store clerk was on his way from work when he was ambushed.
Since the start of the year, at least 53 people have been killed in St James.
