4-year-old shot dead in The Bahamas
A 4-year-old boy is the latest murder victim in The Bahamas.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force (RBPF) reported that Kenton Seymour Jr was travelling in a car with his parents on West and Fleming Streets in Nassau around 10 o’clock last evening when a stray bullet struck him.
Police said the bullet was fired by assailants who were chasing after a man that ran near the family car.
Police said the bullet entered the front windshield and struck Seymour, sitting on his mother’s lap in the front seat.
Seymour was rushed to the hospital, where he died while undergoing treatment.
The Bahamas has recorded over 70 murders this year.
Seymour was one of two people shot dead in The Bahamas last evening.
At a press conference today, Commissioner of Police Clayton Fernander said the 27-year-old man, the shooters’ intended target, is in police custody, assisting with their investigation.
Fernander said the man is known to them as he is on bail for murder.
“His enemies, for whatever reason, [were] trying to take him out...We are trying to keep him alive," the commissioner said as he noted cops would do as much as possible to keep the man off the streets.
Moving forward, Fernander said the RBPF would provide the courts with information on persons seeking bail for crimes such as murder.
He noted that keeping these persons locked up until their cases are completed has the doubled benefits of saving the lives of the accused and innocent people who may be caught in the crossfire when gangs attempt to settle their conflicts in the streets.
“They were just driving to the store, and they just ran across the vehicle,” Fernander said as he noted that criminals have no respect for families or the police.
He said the incident could have been even more tragic as many children play in the area where the shooting occurred.
The top cop has called on the relatives of criminals to do the right thing and stop harbouring them since they could lose their lives in the process.
“I encourage the Bahamian people. If your family or loved ones are involved in crime, be careful have they hang around you, or you could be a target. The incident last night…could have been you or me,” he stated.
Fernander said police have other leads, and they are following in the footsteps of the shooters.
Fernander stated initial information said the incident does not appear to be linked with another shooting recently.
The recently installed top cop said he intends to crack down hard on criminal elements and called on the community to assist police with information on wrong dowers
“We have to take the fight to the criminals, and we will do just that to disrupt what is going on in our communities,” he added.
