7 gifts you should never give someone for Christmas
It's that time of year when you spread Christmas cheer and not Christmas tears... unless they are happy ones, and giving the wrong Christmas gift to someone could very well end up souring one's season.
If you've heard the phrase, "it's the thought that counts," sometimes that does not apply in all situations, and much more thought might be needed.
So, before you end up being the recipient of a bag of coal during the Yuletide Season or uninvited to future Christmas parties, here are seven gifts you should never give someone for Christmas, in no particular order:
Underwear
There is an exception to this gift between couples, however as a gift to a friend, it could be pretty awkward opening up that box of sexy lingerie or briefs on Christmas morning in front of family members.
There is also the possibility such a gift could be taken the wrong way by the recipient, especially if you are just at a co-worker or friendship level.
Exercise equipment/Diet books
Nothing says you need to fix your weight than someone gifting exercise equipment, workout DVDs, or dieting books. This gift can be insensitive to someone as it sounds like something wrong with their body, and they should work on it.
While your intentions might be from a good place, it just comes across as insensitive to that person's struggle and might very well not be your business.
Picture Frame
Yes, some people gift others picture frames, and while you may think it's an excellent present for someone to store a treasured photo, an empty picture frame wrapped in gift paper screams, "I just did not put much thought into a gift, but I hope you can fill it with something that makes you happy."
Chocolates
You would think a box of chocolates would be a sweet treat to gift someone, but in actuality, it is looked down upon by many, especially the older recipient of gifts.
It's easy to walk down a supermarket aisle and spot the perfectly laid out boxes of chocolate and think, "hmm... maybe I should pick this up for grandma," but not everyone likes chocolate.
Some might even say it is a gift for the house, like other snacks sometimes gifted at Christmas, and not meant for the person.
Pets
Imagine waking up to the extra responsibility of needing to feed, bathe, walk and play with a pet that you never asked for. This is what you're doing if you give a pet as a gift to someone.
A pet has needs, and it takes a responsible person to care for one.
Cash
It is an easy gift idea. You don't know what to get someone, so you stuff some cash in an envelope or even straight in a person's hand and wish them the best.
While most people won't turn down money, at Christmas, a more meaningful gift would be better than cold hard cash, perhaps a gift card to that person's favourite store.
Soap
This is a tricky gift. There are artisan soaps and cute liquid body soaps in gift sets. Still, unless you know how that person likes to smell, the odours they detest, or even if their skin is sensitive to specific products, your best bet is to stay away from playing with that person's hygiene routine.
The worst thing is to give someone a luxury soap gift set that you believe looks good in a package but smells gross to the recipient and ends up being tossed in the garbage or, worse yet, regifted and made someone else's awrongd gift to deal with.
