Police interrogated a man in connection with a suspected grenade at a hotel in Plymouth, UK
A man was in police custody in Plymouth in connection with discovering a suspected grenade at a hotel.
He was arrested and taken to Charles Cross police station for questioning after the incident in the Premier Inn at Derry’s Cross.
Armed police were sent to the scene, and part of the city centre was cordoned off while a bomb disposal team dealt with the device.
The team deployed a remote-controlled robot vehicle during the operation on Tuesday night.
The 100m exclusion zone was set up around the hotel during the incident.
Armed police were sent to the Premier Inn following a call about concern for a man’s welfare.
Parts of Royal Parade and Union Street were closed at Derry’s Cross roundabout.
Armed police and an ambulance were seen in the area around 7.50 pm, and people were asked to leave.
The force incident manager Inspector Rachel Mansfield said a man was arrested and taken to Charles Cross police station in connection with the incident.
She said on Wednesday morning: “Police were called to the Premier Inn following concerns for the welfare of a person there.
“They located what was believed to a grenade, and the exclusion zone was in place while the ordnance team from the Navy dealt with the device.
“The cordon was in place while that was done, for public safety.”
An officer said earlier police were first alerted by a concerned member of the public and the incident was not terror-related.
