Accident in eastern Cuba causes two deaths and 13 injuries
BAYAMO, Cuba, Jan 15 (ACN) Two minors died and 13 people were injured in a traffic accident that occurred in the early hours of this morning in a mountainous area of the municipality of Bartolomé Maso, in the Cuban province of Granma.
The unfortunate event took place in areas of the Council Popular Frio de Nagua, in the middle of the Sierra Maestra, about 15 kilometers from the municipal capital, when a truck rented for the mass transportation of passengers had technical problems and went off the road while backing up.
According to the report of journalist Orlando Naranjo Escalona, correspondent of Radio Bayamo, Braudis Pujol Perez, 10, and resident of Frio de Nagua, and Yerlis Solano Peña, 15 and resident of the community Unidad 4 del Caney de Las Mercedes, both from Bartolome Maso, died.
At the time of the accident, the vehicle was going up the hill known as Loma del Albergue, where it broke down, presumably in the transmission rod, said First Lieutenant Eduardo Ramos Reyes, second chief of the National Revolutionary Police in the locality.
Although the driver applied emergency maneuvers and some of the passengers put chocks on the wheels, it was not possible to avoid the collapse, he explained.
Naranjo Escalona pointed out that all the medical services of the local polyclinic were activated to offer first aid to the injured, who were immediately transferred to the Carlos Manuel de Cespedes provincial hospital in the city of Bayamo and the Celia Sanchez Manduley hospital in the coastal city of Manzanillo.
After learning what happened, the main authorities of the municipality went to the place of the accident and continue coordinating actions, both for the clarification of the incident, as well as for the support and assistance to the injured and their families.
