Alleged drug and wildlife smugglers arrested in Guyana
An alleged drug mule was stopped in her bid to take cocaine from Guyana to the United States of America.
The Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) reported that 59-year-old Unique Sunshine London was allegedly attempting to board a flight at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) on Wednesday when she was stopped, and her luggage was searched.
CANU said they allegedly found several packages of cocaine concealed as caramel wafers and biscuits.
Cops said the drugs weighed 11.188kgs and had a street value of US$336,000.
The Lot 54 Haslington, East Coast Demerara resident, has since been charged.
CANU said they also arrested a man identified as Dhanraj Deochand after their investigations revealed he allegedly checked-in luggage for London.
Meanwhile, another man was arrested, attempting to smuggle six finches out of Guyana.
The birds, prized in New York's Caribbean American community for their singing abilities, were hidden in hair rollers.
CANU is advising travellers that “trafficking of narcotics is illegal and care should be taken in examining packages when asked by others to transport them.”
