Anguilla experiencing bad weather from tail end of Tammy
Schools and government offices are closed on the island of Anguilla, which suffered an island-wide power outage during thunderstorm activity due to rain bands associated with Hurricane Tammy.
Anguilla is under a flash flood watch.
The Department of Disaster Management, in an update, said the tail-end of Hurricane Tammy brought predicted thunder and lightning storms for Anguilla.
It notes Government Offices and schools are closed today. The NDMC will meet shortly and says updates will be provided.
The Anguilla Electricity Company (ANGLEC), in an 8 a.m. update, said teams, including key members of management and special contractors, are still assessing the damage to infrastructure and making arrangements to restore power to all feeders island-wide.
It stated: “We are working to be in a state of readiness to restore power as soon as possible today. Our Generation plant sustained damage due to a lightning strike and flooding/roof leaking, which is actively being addressed to ensure systems can be brought online safely.
Lightning and inclement conditions will continue for much of today and maybe tomorrow. As such, ANGLEC’s main offices will remain closed to the public until further notice.”
The public has been advised to ensure all sensitive equipment is unplugged and properly stored away from potential damage and exposure.
