Antigua: All systems in place for start of new school term
Director of Education, Clare Browne, has said all systems are in place to ensure Antigua and Barbuda’s children can learn in a comfortable environment this school term.
The new academic year will begin tomorrow, and over 8,000 children will take their place at either a pre, primary or secondary school
“We are ready to open school Monday morning,” Browne declared while speaking on Prime Minister Gaston Browne’s weekly radio program on Saturday evening.
During the July/August school break, work was done to repair leaking roofs and faulty sewage systems, as well as repair holes in perimeter fences.
Security has also been beefed up to give students and staff a sense of comfort.
There is an ongoing challenge to replace furniture as Browne said thieves and vandals have been destroying or removing the items from school compounds.
“They simply don’t care about the schools,” Browne said as he lamented that vandals and thieves are putting the education of Antigua and Barbuda’s children at risk.
New school furniture should be on the island soon. Still, Browne noted sourcing the replacement furniture has been a problem due to logistical issues in getting them from Trinidad or Canada.
Meanwhile, Browne called on parents and the community to do their part and ensure children are not skipping school.
He is encouraging students to make the best use of the educational opportunities given to them to follow their dreams and become productive members of society.
