Antigua & Barbuda begins examining bids to purchase Alfa Nero
Antigua and Barbuda received 20 bids for buying the abandoned superyacht Alfa Nero.
Ambassador Lionel Hurst, Chief of Staff at the Prime Minister’s Office, revealed this detail in his notes from yesterday’s cabinet meeting.
“Twenty bids were received, and due diligence of the potential purchasers is continuing. The process ought to end in approximately 30 days,” Hurst stated.
The Alfa Nero is owned by sanctioned Russian oligarch Andrey Guryev and is worth around US$81 million.
The 81.2-meter vessel has been docked at the Falmouth Harbour since February after Guryev, a close associate of President Vladimir Putin, was sanctioned by the United States of America following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Antigua and Barbuda began selling the Alfa Nero last month since it threatens the environment in and around Falmouth Harbour. Notices of the sale were placed in local and international media, but neither Guryev nor his representatives responded.
The government noted that when the vessel is sold, the funds will be used to pay debts owed to the vessel’s local suppliers and staff.
