Antigua & Barbuda braces for excessive heat
The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Service has issued an excessive heat warning for the country.
In the weather advisory, which covers August 22 to 29, the Met Service said that islanders could expect the temperature to feel like 38 degrees Celsius and above.
“Light winds and relatively high humidity may allow the heat index to rise to excessive levels resulting in dangerously hot conditions. The threat of health problems, for mainly sensitive people, could rise to, at least, moderate with the potential for significant impacts,” the advisory said.
The elderly, young children, people with chronic illnesses such as breathing difficulties, heart conditions or psychiatric illnesses, the homeless, low-income households and people who work or who exercise in the heat are most at risk during the extreme heat event, according to the Met Service.
If you feel dizzy, nauseous, have extreme thirst or have increased breathing or heartbeats, the Met Service advises you to move to a cool place and hydrate immediately.
“The most dangerous heat illness is heat stroke, with symptoms that include complete or partial loss of consciousness or confusion and high body temperature,” the Met Service said as it urged people to seek medical attention if they or someone in their care experiences any symptom of heat stress.
