Antigua: Court dismisses case over missing evidence; probe underway
A case was dismissed by a Magistrate court in Antigua this week due to the mysterious disappearance of both marijuana and a substantial sum of cash.
The items were allegedly found in the possession of Kimani Donowa, who was arrested and charged six months ago with possession of cannabis and possession with intent to transfer.
During Donowa's initial court appearance in August 2023, the investigating officer was unable to produce the confiscated EC$18,565 and US$1,285 in cash, along with the quantity of marijuana.
The officer confessed to misplacing the funds and claimed no memory of where they might be.
Furthermore, the officer allegedly provided various excuses and attempted to shift blame onto others when questioned about the missing evidence.
Despite ongoing efforts, the exhibits remained unaccounted for during the court hearing at the All Saints Magistrate’s Court, leading Magistrate Ngaio Emanuel to dismiss the case.
The police have since launched an internal investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding the disappearance of the evidence.
