Antigua: Rastafarian Elder Franklyn “King Frank-I” Francis dies
Veteran Antiguan media personality and Ambassador Franklyn "King Frank-I" Francis has died.
King Frank-I died earlier today, and details of his passing were not revealed.
King Frank-I was an elder in the Rastafarian community and a respected voice in sports broadcasting.
He was appointed Antigua and Barbuda's Ambassador to Ethiopia after Prime Minister Gaston Browne, who was a close friend, took office in 2014.
In a statement this morning, the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) sent condolences to the family of King Frank-I, especially to his daughter Denise and the members of his Danika.
"Ambassador King Frank-I was a treasured son of the soil. His passing has left a void in the leadership of the twin-island state and the Rastafarian community. May his soul rest in peace with the ancestors," the Prime Minister's Office said.
OPM remarked: "Ambassador King Frank-I was also instrumental in moving the Legislature to decriminalize possession of small quantities of cannabis and allowing households to plant four cannabis plants in their backyard. He would also be persuasive in encouraging the legalization of medical cannabis in Antigua and Barbuda."
The RasFreeman Foundation Unification of Rastafari said: "Our King, our Leader, our Teacher, our Father, Elder King Frank I has left us and moved on to join our ancestors. We give thanks and praise for his time and work in building and linking the entire Rastafari Nation worldwide. One Love King."
One man commented on Facebook: "We have lost an iconic intellectual pillar in our society. He has long carried the standard for journalism and sports reporting in Antigua and Barbuda and was cool enough to "edutain" us even ingest there was something to learn from his banter with the Chief Rocker back in the day. He deserves the officialdom of a national figure in commemorating his death. Jah Guide King."
