Antigua’s former Education Minister now free of all criminal charges
The High Court of Antigua and Barbuda has ruled in favour of former Education Minister and Member of Parliament for All Saints West, Michael Browne, who was accused of two criminal severe offences.
Browne appeared relieved when he heard that Justice Colin Williams was not satisfied that the crown met the burden of proof.
The judge spent two hours going over the evidence presented in the judge-only trial.
In the end, he weighed the evidence from both sides and could not convict the politician.
Browne was slapped with two charges back in November 2020 – which cannot be disclosed for legal reasons.
The offence has been committed one month before the charges were laid.
In April this year, Magistrate Ngaio Emanuel-Edwards sent the matter up to the High Court after deciding that there was a prima facie case against Browne.
The MP maintained his innocence throughout his embattlement and pleaded not guilty to the charges in July.
What was expected to be a short trial started on November 26.
Browne was represented by Dr. David Dorsette, Jaridy Hewlett, and Sir Gerald Watt QC.
