Antigua’s oldest citizen passes away at age 105
Antigua and Barbuda’s oldest resident, Raymond Hughes, has passed away.
He was 105 years old.
The circumstances surrounding his death have not been confirmed.
Hughes, a retired farmer and cane cutter, became the twin-island’s oldest resident last year following the death of Barbados-born centenarian Hyacinth Mottley on 5th July 2021.
In 2020, Hughes, who had eight children, 22 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren, was memorialized in his hometown of Sea View Farm when a street was renamed in his honour.
While health officials have yet to confirm any additional COVID-19 deaths, reports are that the Seaview Farm resident fell ill after the Christmas holidays and was subsequently hospitalized at the IDC.
Mr Hughes, born on 14th June 1916, became the country’s oldest living citizen following the death of 107-year-old Hyacinth Mottley on 5th July 2021.
He worked at the Antigua Sugar Factory and was also a farmer.
In an interview in 2013, he revealed he travelled to Florida when he was in his thirties and again in his fifties to cut cane.
