At least 2 people dead and 8 rescued after Cuba boat sinks off the coast of Key West
At least two people are dead, and the U.S. Coast Guard rescued eight others as it continues to search the waters south of Key West on Thursday night for nearly a dozen others after a boat that left Cuba the night prior capsized, authorities said.
The U.S. Coast Guard said it began rescue operations in waters about 18 miles southwest of Key West at 1 p.m. when the crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Resolute spotted people in the water and contacted Sector Key West watchstanders, which deployed several vessels and helicopters to aid in the search for 10 people possibly missing.
Authorities said the bodies brought to the shore of the deceased.
The survivors, who remain on a Coast Guard cutter to receive food, water and medical care, told authorities that they had left Puerto de Mariel, which is about 30 miles west of Havana, Wednesday evening, the Coast Guard said.
"Our responders are focused on the search for survivors," Senior Chief Seth Haynes, Key West command centre supervisor, said in a statement. "We will continue to search through the night for those reported missing, and if any mariners see or hear anything, to render assistance if possible and contact the Coast Guard."
