Bahamas: Man charged for killing his 84-year-old mother
A man accused of murdering his 84-year-old mother was supported by three of his sisters when he made his first court appearance yesterday.
Prosecutors allege that Sean Laing, 50, of Windsor Place, strangled Pearl Laing on March 7.
Police did not initially suspect foul play until an autopsy revealed that she had died from
strangulation.
Laing was not required to enter a plea to the murder charge when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Joyann Ferguson-Pratt.
Laing’s lawyer, Lennox Coleby, asked the court to order that he receive a complete physical on admission to the prison to determine if he had any healing bites or scratches.
Coleby submitted that it was impossible to strangle someone without the victim fighting back.
Prosecuting attorney Inspector Samantha Miah said Laing’s relatives had informed her that he suffered from severe seizures.
One of his sisters produced a Ziplock bag filled with his medication. The court orderly examined the medicines to ensure they were valid in Laing’s name.
Following an inquiry from the magistrate, Laing said he had not taken his medicine for the day and the pills needed to be taken with food.
Consequently, Ferguson-Pratt told his family to get him a meal.
Laing and his sisters tearfully embraced before he was remanded to prison to await trial.
Laing next appears in court on July 14. On that date, prosecutors intend to fast-track his case to the Supreme Court for trial.
