Bahamas: Man runs a woman over with his car after domestic dispute
A man involved in a domestic dispute with a woman on Key West Street ran her over with his car yesterday, police said.
Assistant Superintendent of Police Audley Peters said the man was in custody and the woman was alive and “appeared to be coherent” when emergency medical services took her away from the scene.
He said police were alerted to the incident shortly after 3 p.m.
“On arrival at the scene, the first responders met the female lying on the street with abrasions about the body and a vehicle that was overturned on the scene,” Peters said.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that there was a domestic dispute with this female and a gentleman.
“And as a result of that domestic dispute, the driver of the vehicle came through the street and ran the lady over with the car.
“As he did so, he struck another vehicle.
“His vehicle came to a stop, and he exited that vehicle and attempted to leave the scene. In so doing, persons in the community were able to accost him.
“And so, he’s now in custody concerning this incident.”
Peters confirmed that the driver of the vehicle was the same person who had been arguing with the victim.
The incident comes amid heightened national concern over violence in the home after four-year-old D’Onya Bella Walker was beaten to death just over a week ago.
Only days later, police reported that a man had been stabbed by his girlfriend, who suspected that he had sexually assaulted her 12-year-old daughter.
Peters yesterday urged couples to seek outside help, if needed, to resolve domestic issues peacefully.
“There is no legal right for you to use violence against another person unless you are attempting to protect yourself from violence itself,” he said.
He encouraged couples to use mediators and the courts.
“If you and your partner are not seeing eye to eye, try and walk away peacefully or go to the courts and have the courts assist you if there are other things involved such as children or finances that may be required, child support, rather than coming to a point where you have violence involved in the relationship,” he said.
