Bahamas: Man sentenced to 18 months in jail after being caught with a kilo of cocaine
A man has been jailed for 18 months after police in Crooked Island caught him red-handed with a kilo of cocaine.
Magistrate Samuel McKinney convicted Gregory McPhee, 41, of drug possession with intent to supply on Friday after a one-day trial.
McPhee will serve an additional six months behind bars if he doesn’t pay a $10,000 fine.
The fisherman did not have a lawyer at his trial, and he did not challenge the prosecution’s evidence.
In a record of interviews, McKinney rejected McPhee’s claim that he intended to give the cocaine to police.
When questioned by police, McPhee said that he’d found the drugs on a beach in Acklins. However, he said he didn’t trust police officer officers there, so he brought the cocaine to Crooked Island.
However, the magistrate found that the evidence did not support this claim.
Acting on intelligence, Sergeant 3274 Kendal Campbell and Constable 3822 Jarad Butterfield went to the ferry dock in True Blue Settlement in a marked police car on September 14, 2021, around 10:35 a.m.
They were on the lookout for the occupants of a grey Nissan Note.
Butterfield testified that the vehicle driver, license plate SD 40, sped off after he looked in their direction.
The driver, Elvin Scavella, finally stopped following a police pursuit. He had two passengers: Renwick Moss and the defendant.
When the police stopped the car, McPhee did not hand the cocaine over to the officers.
They found the cocaine hidden near his groin in a fanny pack.
Officers did not find anything illegal on the car’s occupants or in the vehicle.
Inspector Timothy Bain was the prosecutor.
