Bahamas: Mother supports brother convicted of indecent assault on her child
A woman paid her brother’s fine after being convicted of indecently assaulting her daughter on Friday.
Magistrate Samuel McKinney found the 26-year-old guilty of touching the 13-year-old’s hips following a trial.
The victim, who lived with her grandmother and uncle on a Family Island, wrote a letter to her school’s principal and told him about the inappropriate touch that allegedly took place in August 2020.
As a result, the principal notified the authorities. Following an investigation, police arrested and charged the uncle with indecent assault.
The defence called the accuser’s mother as a witness, and, during her testimony, she alleged that her daughter lied a lot.
However, she could not say whether the incident occurred as she did not live in the home.
McKinney handed down a fine of $1,500 or a one-year sentence in prison to the uncle.
He was also sentenced to probation for 18 months. If he’s convicted of any offence during his probation, he would be sent to prison for nine months.
Inspector Timothy Bain was prosecuted, and Ian Cargill represented the uncle.
