Bahamian Plane crash victim thankful to be alive after incident
One of the survivors of last Sunday’s Deadman’s Cay plane crash in the southern Bahamas has broken her silence regarding the doomed flight, which claimed the life of a young mother.
“I am immensely grateful for life after this traumatising ordeal and consider myself truly blessed to have walked away with only severe bruising and slight immobility,” Le’Annka Rigby said.
She recalled that the plane, a Piper PA31 aircraft with United States Registration N711JW, developed a “mechanical issue” shortly after takeoff and crashed into marshlands located near the airport.
Rigby thanked members of the Long Island community for coming out to rescue her and the other plane crash victims.
There are no words or favours that can express my never-ending gratitude to you all,” she wrote.
She has offered condolences to the family and friends of Aletheia Newbold, who was the incident’s sole fatality.
“I am so sorry. I cannot imagine the pain you feel,” Rigby said while noting that she helped the pilot administer CPR on the 22-year-old to save her life.
“I am shattered and heartbroken by her sudden departure. I extend my deepest condolences to you all, and I pray for your comfort and peace,” she added.
Rigby’s statement preceded an announcement by Deputy Prime Minister Chester Cooper that the Aircraft Accident Investigation Authority (AAIA) is working to expedite the investigation process.
“We hope to be able to give some answers to the Bahamian people and the passengers real soon,” Cooper told the media at the Office of the Prime Minister.
He called on witnesses to come forward with whatever information they may have that would assist with bringing closure to the accident victims and their families.
