Barbados:High number of jobless a worry

Barbados’ continued high unemployment has a senior trade unionist, and a private sector leader worried.

Congress of Trade Unions and Staff Associations of Barbados (CTUSAB) president Edwin O’Neal said “still too significant a number” of Barbadians not working.

Barbados Private Sector Association chairman Trisha Tannis said the country was “basically . . . sitting on 17 per cent unemployment at the moment” and hoped there would be a positive trickle-down impact from an expected tourism recovery.

Tennis, co-chair of the Barbados Economic Recovery and Transformation Programme Monitoring Committee, and O’Neal, a member, spoke yesterday during the Social Partnership body’s presentation of its 12th public report. (SC)
