Belize: Man attacked by crocodile
A man diving and spearfishing in Belize was attacked and injured by a crocodile in Caye Caulker Village.
A police report states the attack occurred around 10 am on the north side of the Split area in the village. The victim has been identified as Joshua Young, a Belizean resident of Caye Caulker.
He received injuries to his forehead and chin. He was transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital for further treatment and is in a stable condition.
The Belize Forest Department says it is working with its wildlife partner ACES Wildlife Rescue to search for and capture the crocodile.
The department has issued the following safety habits for Belizeans:
• Do not feed any crocodile. This is a dangerous practice and can cause crocodiles to lose their fear of humans.
• Do not dispose of fish carcasses nearby or in areas where fishing. This can cause indirect feeding of crocodiles.
• Protect your pets if you live close to the water.
• Place garbage properly and do not dump waste in or close to the water. This can also cause indirect feeding of crocodiles.
• Leave crocodiles alone. Keep your distance, and do not try to capture or interfere with them.
The Forest Department says practising these safety measures can prevent crocodile attacks on humans. It advises the public that should they notice a crocodile showing aggressive behaviour, the Forest Department should be contacted.
