Bermuda prepares for the passage of Hurricane Earl
Bermuda is currently under a Hurricane Watch and a Tropical Storm Warning as Hurricane Earl makes its way closer to the island.
The Emergency Measures Organisation (EMO) and its agency partners met again today to develop a plan for the hurricane.
Businesses and property owners have been advised to prepare and secure all items, such as construction material and garbage bins, that could become projectiles during the storm.
Forecasts show Hurricane Earl, which is expected to become a category three hurricane later today, will pass about 100 miles to the southeast of Bermuda around midnight on Friday.
At 11 am, the US National Hurricane Earl’s centre of circulation is located about 230 miles (365 kilometres) south of Bermuda. Earl has maximum sustained winds near 105 mph (165 km/h) with higher gusts.
The Bermuda Weather Service said the island would experience tropical storm force winds from this evening, with periods of heavy showers and thunderstorms.
“Dangerous surf is affecting the south shore, with high seas expected offshore. Storm surge up to a foot above the normal tide may be experienced especially on south and east facing bays,” the weather service said.
