Bill Cosby is a Free Man: Sexual Assault Conviction Overturned
Bill Cosby was released from prison Wednesday 30 June after Pennsylvania's highest court overturned his sexual assault conviction from 2018 for which he was sentenced to serve three to ten years, stating that Cosby’s due process rights were violated.
This news comes with much celebration from the black community globally. Bill Cosby has been a beloved figure in many households across the globe, and his conviction was a great shock that came with several conspiracy theories.
Four Justices of the Supreme Court formed the majority that ruled in Cosby’s favour while another three opposed.
The panel of Pennsylvania State Supreme Court judges said in their opinion that a former Montgomery County district attorney's decision to not prosecute Cosby in 2005 in return for his deposition in a civil case was ultimately used against him at trial.
Cosby would have served almost three years in jail before his release Wednesday afternoon.
Cosby tweeted a photo of himself with a quote Wednesday night, thanking his supporters.
He did not speak to reporters, but his attorney, Jennifer Bonjean gave brief remarks.
"He is extremely happy to be home," she stated, "This has been a hard three years for this entire family. It's really a blessing for him. He says his heart is beating really fast."
He was picked up from outside a prison in Philadelphia by his press representative, Andrew Wyatt. Another of his attorneys, Brian Perry, stated they were headed to his Pennsylvania home to celebrate his release.
