Black Stalin, Calypso veteran, dead at 81
The news of the death of well-known calypso veteran Leroy “Black Stalin” Calliste simply came as a sudden and shocking surprise. His death was just recently confirmed. “Black Stalin” was not just one of Leroy “Black Stalin” Calliste’s stage identities, but it was also the moniker he went by in the professional world. He was 81. Calliste was born on September 24, 1941, and became famous as a calypsonian, obtaining the title of National Calypso Monarch for the first time in 1979 with his compositions Caribbean Man and Play One.

In acknowledgement of his commitment to the calypso music and culture of Trinidad and Tobago, as well as the contributions that he has made to these areas, the University of the West Indies in St. Augustine presented him with an honorary degree in 2008.
