Bryan re-elected as USVI Governor
Governor Albert Bryan won yesterday’s gubernatorial election on the US Virgin Islands to earn his second term in office.
Preliminary data from the Elections System of the Virgin Islands showed Bryan received 11,544 votes or 55.85 per cent of the electorate.
His closest challenger Kurt Vialet received 38.35 per cent of the territory-wide vote.
In his victory speech, Bryan said the win for himself and the Democratic Party in the legislature paves the way for his administration to implement the policies they have promised Virgin Islanders since the “obstructionist” are no longer in the parliament.
“We will do a lot of work in the next four years. We are going to have fun, we are going to stay healthy, we are going to work together, and we are going to be stronger than ever,” Bryan told supporters last evening.
The governor added this would be his last time running for any statewide office.
Bryan’s running mate, Tregenza Roach, told supporters that he never doubted that the Virgin Islanders would have given them another term.
“It doesn’t mean that I took the people for granted, but I knew there were sufficient people who believed in the quality of work that we have done and how we addressed some of the pressing issues affecting this territory,” Roach said.
He said the government would refocus on their plans to continue rebuilding the US Virgin Islands after Hurricane Irma and Maria in 2017.
Elsewhere, Stacey Plaskett secured her place in the US Congress as the US Virgin Islands’ delegate after winning the House of Representative election.
The popular congresswoman was unopposed in the election, and she received 15,559 votes or 98.76 per cent of the ballots cast.
