CAL seeks Minister's intervention after negotiations with pilots stall
Following rumours of a breakdown in ongoing talks between Caribbean Airlines (CAL) and the Trinidad and Tobago Airline Pilots Association (TTALPA) earlier this year, the airline has formally sought the intervention of the Labour Minister.
A week ago, the parties entered negotiations on the collective agreement for pilots from September 1, 2015, to August 31, 2018.
In a statement, CAL said due to challenges with reaching an agreement with the pilots’ union for the bargaining period, it has chosen to engage the processes under the Industrial Relations Act and have the matter reported to Minister Stephen McClashie.
“After careful consideration and in light of the challenges faced in reaching a mutually agreeable resolution, Caribbean Airlines Limited has decided to engage the processes under the Industrial Relations Act and to have the matter reported to the Minister of Labour,” the airline read.
On August 20, 2023, the Industrial Court issued an injunction against the union, preventing pilots from taking industrial action.
Over 90 pilots called in sick over three days, leading to delays and cancelling several international and domestic flights. The union denied that the action was part of a strike.
Despite this, CAL said it remains committed to a constructive and transparent dialogue with TTALPA and is hopeful that the Minister’s intervention will bring about an early resolution.
