Caribbean flight diverted to the Azores
The Judiciary Police (PJ) of the Azores have detained a 36-year-old man, on Terceira Island, for the alleged crime of drug trafficking.
The passenger was travelling to the Caribbean when he felt unwell during the flight, which had to be diverted to the Azores when the authorities discovered he had drugs in his stomach.
According to a statement from the PJ, on February 14, a transatlantic flight originating in Europe and destined for the Caribbean landed at Lajes airport due to "disturbances caused by the suspect".
Once on land, the man developed symptoms of acute poisoning that led to his admission to the Hospital de Santo Espírito on Terceira Island. There it was found that the symptoms resulted from the existence of drug packaging inside his body, namely resin and cannabis leaves.
