Coastguard rescues 27 people from sinking ship near Saba
Approximately 27 persons were rescued yesterday morning near Saba after the boat they were sailing on suffered engine problems.
The Dutch Caribbean Coast Guard said it received reports that the vessel was drifting at sea. When the ship's captain was contacted, he reported that the boat had no lifesaving equipment onboard his vessel and needed help quickly.
The cutter Poema sailed towards the vessel, and when they arrived, they saw the Navigator fishing boat from Saba helping the captain and passengers.
The vessel was then towed to Saba, where the health of all passengers was confirmed.
It was then taken to St Maarten.
The Dutch Caribbean Coast Guard said it believed the persons on board were illegal immigrants and turned them over to police and immigration.
