Cop shot during clash with protestors in Guadeloupe
The violent protests in Guadeloupe against the coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine mandate and social inequalities continued overnight, with protestors in the municipality of Abymes clashing with police.
The Gendarmerie of Guadeloupe and the Northern Islands reported that police officers were thrown with projectiles and Molotov cocktails, and shooters opened fire on the law enforcement officers.
A 32-year-old policeman received a gunshot wound to the knee.
He was taken to the Guadeloupe University Hospital for treatment.
Alexandre Rochette, the prefect of the Guadeloupe region, issued a statement where he strongly condemned acts of violence.
Victoire Jasmin, Guadeloupe’s representative in the French Senate, called for peace on the island.
“I condemn and denounce once again the acts of violence in Guadeloupe, the instigators who incite the insurrection, roadblocks, thefts, fires, vandalism…it is incomprehensible. People need serenity. I call for PEACE,” she said in a tweet.
