COVID-19 Cases in SKN Back on the Rise
There has been a high surge of COVID-19 cases within the Federation of St. Kitts and Nevis over the Christmas period. The twin-island federation has been hard hit by the 4th wave of the COVID-19 virus, which has amassed a total of 844 cases during the period December 24, 2021, to January 5, 2022.
Of the 844 new cases, 54.5%, which is a total of 460 cases, were vaccinated, which means they were either fully vaccinated, had their booster shots, or may have only taken their first dose of the vaccine. However, only 7.7% of the new cases, which is a total of 65 persons, were noted to have not been vaccinated.
There were eleven (11) persons hospitalized, four (4) of which reside in Nevis and seven (7) of which reside in St. Kitts.
This surge in cases coincidently occurred during the twin-island federation’s festive season. St. Kitts and Nevis had their 50th-anniversary carnival celebrations from December 24, 2021, to January 2, 2022.
The large increase in cases has delayed the opening of schools. Schools were scheduled to reopen on January 10, 2022, but have since been rescheduled to January 24, 2022.
