COVID-19 crisis in St. Kitts and Nevis worsens
COVID-19 positive cases have increased in St. Kitts and Nevis by a whopping 68 in two days as of today Sunday. This is the highest number of cases within the twin-island Federation since the start of the pandemic. The country now has 123 active cases.
In an address made to the Federation on Friday evening, The Prime Minister of the Federation, Hon. Dr. Timothy Harris stated that on Saturday, June 12 at 6:00 pm the country will be placed on partial lockdown for the next two weeks, ending Saturday, June 26. Essential business places such as the banks, supermarkets, and pharmacies are allowed to remain open for a specific period with strict adherence to the COVID-19 nonpharmaceutical protocols, but the entire country goes on total lockdown from 6:00 pm until 5:00 am daily. Restaurants are also allowed to open but can only serve takeout.
However, the Premier of Nevis, Hon. Mark Brantley, has opted not to implement the partial lockdown on the island of Nevis. He instead outlined new regulations for Nevis allowing persons to work and conduct business as usual as there are currently no active cases on the island of Nevis.
The community spread impacted several businesses before the partial lockdown including banks, the Post Office, the Police Force, and prison inmates, as well as the country’s general hospital, JNF. The country is facing its first health crisis since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. Four (4) persons remain hospitalized, one of which is in critical condition at the ICU.
