Dengue Outbreak in Guyana: MOH takes action to prevent further spread
Minister of Health Dr Frank Anthony has activated a Technical Working Group to assess and mitigate the dengue outbreak in Guyana.
The Ministry of Health (MOH) said Guyana has recorded 2,169 cases of dengue, with 239 patients hospitalised and 11 dengue related deaths for this year.
In a statement last evening, the ministry said the Technical Working Group has recommended several measures including creating public awareness campaigns to promote environmental sanitation, hygienic practices and the prevention of Dengue and other mosquito borne diseases.
The ministry is stepping up its environmental and entomological measures fogging (fumigation), residual spraying, home inspections and distribution of larvicidal chemicals across Guyana.
Rapid diagnostic test kits and other laboratory supplies and equipment have also been distributed in an effort to increase diagnosis capacity and surveillance.
“Considering this disease does not have a cure, medication and medical supplies have been distributed in adequate quantity to all regions to ensure symptomatic treatment of all patients throughout the health care system in keeping with a revised national treatment guideline,” the ministry stated.
Guyanese have been urged to take steps to eliminate mosquito breeding sites around their homes, schools and at mining sites where malaria cases are more prevalent.
