DJ killed at illegal party in Westmoreland JA
A sound system selector is dead, and a licensed firearm holder in police custody following a shooting incident sparked by an altercation that started at a party that was being staged in breach of the Disaster Risk Management Act at Llandilo, Westmoreland, on Thursday night.
The dead man has been identified as 33-year-old Andre ‘DJ Jashie’ Baker, of a Llandilo (Phase One) address, who was arguably Westmoreland’s most popular music selector. The licensed firearm holder, who took custody following the incident, is a 42-year-old businessman of Llandilo (Phase One).
He is the second person to be killed in Westmoreland due to an altercation at an illegal party.
The police report that Baker was playing music from his laptop at the unauthorized party staged in the Llandilo housing scheme when a female patron reportedly bounced against the laptop, resulting in it being damaged.
An argument reportedly developed between the woman and Baker after he began demanding payment for the damaged laptop. The businessman intervened, and he, too, got embroiled in the heated argument. However, other patrons managed to quell the dispute.
At about 11:40 pm, while the partygoers were leaving the venue, the businessman was reportedly seated in his Range Rover motor vehicle, parked along the Llandilo main road, when Baker accosted him.
Another altercation developed between the men during which brought a firearm into play, and Baker was shot. The police were summoned to the scene.
When the police arrived, they saw Baker on the ground suffering from gunshot wounds. He was rushed to the Savanna-la-Mar Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
“We are aware that these illegal parties are being held, and, so far, we have been successful in clamping down on a number of them, but these persons are always finding other ways to host these events,” a police officer told reporters. “We hope these promoters and other persons hosting these illegal parties realize that lives are being lost at these events.”
Just over a month ago, another man was shot and killed after another man got involved in a dispute while attending an illegal party in Little London.
