DJ Kool Herc, Father of Hip Hop, to receive national award in Jamaica
DJ Kool Herc will be honoured by the Jamaican Government for his role in the international recognition of Reggae music and his pioneering role in the development of Hip Hop.
The legendary DJ, birth name Clive Campbell, will receive the Order of Distinction in the Rank of Commander.
Herc was nominated for the award by Frederick Morton Jr and Zachary Harding.
Morton, CEO and founder of TEMPO Networks, was over the moon with the announcement that the DJ would be recognised by the Jamaican Government, particularly since Hip Hop is celebrating its 50thanniversary.
Morton said he had a vision years ago for the DJ to be honoured and he worked hard to see that vision realised.
“Words cannot adequately express my excitement for this award to be bestowed upon the Founder of Hip Hop, DJ Kool Herc, Mr Clive Campbell, for his pioneering contribution. Jamaica, his amazing home country, now honours and celebrates him in a manner deserving of his impact,” he said.
“I love hip hop and have had this burning desire and idea in my mind for years and to see it now a reality where Mr Campbell receives his flowers is just so heartwarming. Thank you to my good friend and brother, Mr Zachary Harding of Delta Capital Partners, for seeing my vision and working with me to get it done.
"Much more will be announced in the coming months as TEMPO Networks continues to move our amazing region forward on the world stage - stay tuned!" he said.
Born in 1955 in Kingston, DJ Kool Herc migrated to the US in 1967 at the age of 12.
As a DJ, he became known for his interest in the break section of songs where the beat would continue after the vocals stopped. The breaks laid the foundation for the development of Hip Hop, earning him the title “Father of Hip Hop”.
