Dutch Royals begin tour of St Maarten
King Willem-Alexander, Queen Máxima and Catharina-Amalia, the Princess of Orange, have touched down in St Maarten to begin the fourth stop on their royal tour of the Dutch Caribbean islands.
The royals landed at the Princess Juliana International Airport, welcomed by Governor Ajamu Baly and Prime Minister Silveria Jacobs.
Their first engagement on the two-day trip was a tour of the airport, which Hurricane Irma severely damaged in 2017.
Their official schedule said day one on St Maarten would see the royals getting a first-hand view of hurricane reconstruction efforts.
The King and Queen and the Princess of Orange will assist in a disaster exercise.
They will visit the St Maarten Medical Centre and engage with patients before touring an expansion project.
The royals will have lunch with government officials.
In the afternoon, the royal party will be taken on the Colour Me SXM mural walk in Philipsburg.
The day will conclude with a cultural show on the Boardwalk in Philipsburg.
Day Two will see the royals kick off their day with a visit to Fort Amsterdam.
They will go on a birding excursion, searching for the island’s national bird, the brown pelican. While at the fort, the royals will receive a lesson on its history.
Residents of the White and Yellow Cross residential home for senior citizens and people with disabilities will receive a visit from the royals.
Next, they will visit a science fair, where primary and secondary school pupils will present their solutions for reducing plastic waste on the island.
The St Maarten leg of the royal tour will conclude with an evening party hosted by the governor.
