Earthquake Shakes Guyana
On Sunday 31st January 2021, Guyana was shaken by an earthquake of magnitude 5.6 near Boa Vista, Roraima, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicentre near Boa Vista, Roraima, Brazil at 3:05 pm local time. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. Our monitoring service identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.7.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the epicentre. Weak shaking might have been felt in Boa Vista (pop. 235,200) located 139 km from the epicentre.
