Edinson Cavani and Cristiano Ronaldo break the 11-year-old record with Man Utd goal
Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani scored in Man Utd's 3-0 win over Tottenham on Saturday night. Their combination for the team's second goal has broken a record that stood for over a decade.
Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani combined for Manchester United's second goal at Tottenham, breaking an 11-year-old Premier League and club record in the process. The two veteran strikers started upfront in north London as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer tweaked his system.
United began with a back five in their 3-0 victory with Ronaldo and Cavani getting on the scoresheet. Ronaldo's superb finish saw him open the scoring in the first half before turning provider for the Uruguayan. His through ball sent Cavani clear, and he beat Hugo Lloris to double United's lead.
That goal was the first time two United players over the age of 34 have combined since Paul Scholes set up Ryan Giggs in August 2010 against Newcastle. Marcus Rashford came off the bench to add a third after a difficult week for the club, but the forward was pleased with the response.
He said: "It's been a difficult week; it is for any team when you don't win. We've responded the only way we know-how. The staff, the players all want to win."Playing for Man Utd, there's always pressure; you have to learn to enjoy it. Part of playing for this club is to come out of difficult moments. This club has always bounced back.
"I think [Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's] prepared for the team we're playing against. We all have to buy into what the manager tells us to do. Today that helped us come away with the three points"There's more to come [from us]. As long as we keep improving, keep picking up points, we'll see where we have come to the end of the season."
Last weekend's Liverpool mauling came after several poor results and performances. As a result, Solskjaer has been under massive pressure, questioning whether he was the right man to lead United. In recent months a clean sheet provided the basis for the win, with defensive shutouts being a rarity.
"The first goal always decides how the game goes."We've got a hard week again. Champions League game than City. We've got to digest this one and be ready for Tuesday."He added: "The experience of Edinson Cavani and Cristiano is massive. We need it. We can't hide. The week has been difficult for all the players. They really stuck at it. Experience counts in situations like this."
