El Benzo updates Gregory Isaacs’ 'Rumours', ‘Night Nurse’ I’m
US-based dancehall artiste El Benzo pays tribute to reggae legend Gregory Isaacs by blending contemporary dancehall sounds with the themes of Isaacs' timeless classics, 'Night Nurse' and 'Rumours'.
"I wanted to create a point where past, present, and future intersect while channelling the spirit of Gregory's songs. I grew up listening to his music. Unsure about obtaining permission to sample his songs, I decided to give them a modern update instead," explained El Benzo.
He drew inspiration from the themes of songs like 'Rumours', exploring their impacts on people's lives in a 21st-century context that includes social media. He also investigated similar updated concepts in 'Night Nurse'.
"What is the modern equivalent of a 'Night Nurse'? Is it drugs, sex, or affection? The song delves into emotions, depression, late-night doubts, addictions, and coping with life," added El Benzo.
El Benzo refers to the 1988 cult hit 'Rumours' by Gregory Isaacs—a monster hit that captured the hard-hitting bass-driven electro-dancehall sound popular at the time. The El Benzo single offers a fresh take, featuring his smooth vocals over a hip-hop-influenced beat.
The other referenced single is ‘Night Nurse,’ released by Gregory Isaacs in 1982 after signing with Island Records. The title track of Isaacs' album achieved top 40 status on the UK Albums Chart.
