Former Antigua and Barbuda Prime Minister Sir Lester Bird have died at age 83
Antigua and Barbuda have been plunged into mourning after news broke that former Prime Minister Sir Lester Bird died.
The Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) confirmed that Bird passed away around 6 this morning.
A few months ago, the former head of government had a leg amputated after his toe became infected.
After his stay, the island's major hospital was renamed the Sir Lester Bird Mount St John’s Medical Centre (SLBMSJMC).
The OPM said all flags across Antigua and Barbuda will be flown at half-mast, and the 83-year-old will be given a state funeral.
Prime Minister Gaston Browne commented: "Sincerest condolences to the family of our National Hero, Sir Lester, who transitioned to the great beyond earlier this morning.”
“Sir Lester was a great son of the soil, who contributed significantly to the socio-economic development of our nation. May his soul Rest In Peace and rise in glory."
