Former Calypso monarch drowns in Dominica
It’s a tragic start to the New Year in Dominica as four-time Kaiso Monarch Melvin Constant, sobriquet Solo has died in a drowning incident. It is reported he was on vacation in Dominica.
According to reports, the incident occurred in Tibay, Portsmouth, on January 1, 2023.
Constant, 75, based in the USA, was known for many calypso hits, including “Mass in the Cemetery”. During the 1970s, Solo ruled the Dominican calypso scene with several hard-hitting tunes. He won the title of Calypso King in 1973, 1975, 1976 and 1977.
This is said to be the first drowning recorded in Dominica for 2023.
Alex Bruno, Founder of the Dominica Calypso “Kaiso” Hall of Fame, extended condolences to the family and friends, the Dominica Calypso Association (DCA), the entire Dominican Kaiso, and the broader community on the passing of Melvin “Solo” Constant.
On Facebook, he posted that Solo was inducted into the Calypso Hall of Fame on October 24, 2008.
He said: “The Hall of Fame stands willing, ready and able to assist with the send-off of our brother and friend, which is fitting for a king.”
Meanwhile, the Dominica Calypso Association has extended its deepest condolences to the family, friends and fans of Melvin Constant, more affectionately known as KING SOLO.
