Former liquor store employee fined $600 for stealing alcoholic beverages
A father of three claimed that desperation drove him to steal an assortment of alcoholic beverages from his employer.
Tevin Dorsett, 26, of Soldier Road, Nassau, Bahamas, was arrested on May 28 after his bosses caught him loading a pallet of alcoholic beverages, valued at $1,832.92, onto a truck without permission.
Dorsett did not have a lawyer, so he addressed the court himself.
According to Dorsett, his ability to earn extra money had been affected by the lockdowns due to COVID-19.
Dorsett said he needed the money to take care of his three children.
When police searched Dorsett’s home, they found more alcoholic beverages suspected of being stolen, the court heard.
Dorsett pleaded guilty to stealing because of employment at his arraignment before Chief Magistrate Joyann Ferguson-Pratt.
Dorsett, however, denied a charge of unlawful possession.
Ferguson-Pratt said, “I understand your plight, but it is never right to steal.”
He would be liable to six months in prison if he breaches his probation.
Dorsett has until June 7 to pay his fine. He said that he needed the $715.40 that police had seized as an exhibit during the theft investigation to pay the fine.
Ferguson-Pratt ordered police to return the seized money to him.
The prosecutor, Sergeant 3605 Samantha Miah, also withdrew the unlawful possession charge.
Dorsett’s co-defendant, Jermaine Seymour, 45, of Davis Street, faced the same charges. The prosecutor withdrew the charges against him as well.
The magistrate fined Dorsett $600 or two months in prison and sentenced him to probation for eight months.
