Guyana: Detainee of the Brickdam Police Station confessed to starting the fire
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) announced today that a detainee of the Brickdam Police Station confessed to starting the fire that almost destroyed the complex.
In a statement, GPF alleged that Clarence Greene, an unemployed 26-year-old man of Lot 2292 Princess Street Lodge, confessed on video that he started the fire, which destroyed over 70 per cent of the complex in Georgetown,
Greene, who was arrested early on October 2nd for an alleged armed robbery, was placed and a cell.
GPF said Greene “told investigators during his confession that his motive for starting the fire was due to him being detained for a couple of hours, and he became frustrated.”
Police said Greene’s confession was backed up by two other inmates who claimed that the suspect told them exactly how he carried out the devastating act.
Cops allege Greene lit a piece of sponge from a mattress, and he fished the lit material through a vent and into a room filled with documents.
President Dr Mohammed Irfaan Ali previously alleged that the incident was politically motivated. Still, police did not reveal any link to a series of threats announced by the head of state.
