Guyana: Former finance minister appears in court
Former finance minister, Winston Jordan, is to due reappear in court on June 2, after a magistrate at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court recused herself from presiding over the case in which he is accused of misconduct in public office.
Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus, citing that she knows some of the lawyers involved in the case, became the second judicial official after Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan to recuse themselves from the matter which has now been transferred again to the Chief Magistrate for reassignment.
Jordan, who served as finance minister in the coalition A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) government that was voted out of office in 2020, is accused of willfully misconducting himself by acting recklessly while performing the duties of Minister of Finance and being the concerned Minister for the National Industrial and Commercial Investments Limited (NICIL).
The prosecution alleges that he signed NICIL (Transfer of Property) Order No 50 of 2020, transferring to and vesting to BK Marine Inc, all buildings, erections, stellings, platforms, and further appurtenances over 2.553 acres, for payment of GUY$20,260,276 (One Guyana dollar=US$0.004 cents) for the property valued over five billion dollars.
Jordan, who made his first court appearance on December 28, 2021, and was not required to enter a plea, has been released on three million dollars bail.
