Guyana: Over 6,000 children vaccinated against Covid-19
The Guyanese government extended the reach of its adolescent coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccination drive to Regions Six and Nine.
The program started last week at the St Stanislaus College in Georgetown, and so far, 6,020 children have received their first shot of the Pfizer vaccine.
At today’s COVID-19 Update, Health Minister Dr Frank Anthony said he was pleased with the progress of the adolescent vaccination program thus far.
“The rollout has been pretty good. We started in Region Four [and] we have moved into Region Three, we also did some vaccination yesterday in Region Nine, and today we will be in Region Six,” he said.
“We are also at the same time training the staff within the region to be able to administer these vaccines. So, the first two weeks, it’s both doing vaccination, and it’s a learning process for the staff within the region. Because we have some staff that went up centrally to train and as well as supervise the vaccination.”
According to Anthony, this training will allow an independent rollout of the vaccines in some communities.
The minister said he was happy that parents brought their children vaccinated at the various pop-up sites.
When classes reopen next week, only fully vaccinated students will be allowed to attend school in person. A child will be considered vaccinated two weeks after they received their second shot of the Pfizer vaccine.
The minister said the plan is to have vaccination sites set up at schools over the next few weeks to vaccinate eligible students.
