Guyana: Prison escapee recaptured more than a year after breakout
A convicted killer who escaped from prison more than a year ago has been recaptured after seeking medical attention with a knife stuck in his neck.
Police confirmed that “high-profile” prisoner Samuel Gouveia was arrested on Tuesday at the Mahdia
District Hospital, where he had gone to get treatment for a wound to his neck. He had sustained the injury during an argument with another man over money late Monday night.
Gouveia turned up at the hospital with the knife still stuck in the left side of his neck hours later.
The convict was escorted to the Georgetown Public Hospital and placed under police guard.
He was positively identified by a prison officer and by records and tattoos on his left hand.
Gouveia had been convicted for manslaughter on November 23, 2015, fatal stabbing of 35-year-old miner Santee Solomon.
He served 18 years and nine months in prison when he broke out of the Mazaruni Prison on February 15, 2021.
