Guyana receives DNA results of Mahdia dorm fire victims
The bodies of 14 children, who were killed in last Sunday’s fire at the Mahdia Secondary School girls’ dormitory, were positively identified by DNA analysis.
The Government of Guyana received DNA results yesterday from the Pathology Laboratory at Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, in New York City. Dr Carlos Cordon-Cardo, Professor and Systems Chair, and internationally renowned for DNA analysis, led a team of experts in conducting the analyses, Guyana’s Department of Public Information (DPI) reported.
The bodies, which were identified, were those of 13 girls and five-year-old Adanye Jerome—the sole male fire victim.
DPI said the Guyanese Government is grateful for assistance provided by the Mount Sinai team, Pathologist Dr Shubhaker Karra Paul and the Hess Corporation to complete the identification process.
DPI added the bodies would be turned over to funeral homes for burial in accordance with the wishes of family members.
